What car do you drive? Year-make- model-class-modifications - future plans for the car.
I drive a 2006 Mazdaspeed6 in the Modified AWD class. I put a cobb tuning air intake on the car to replace a cheap intake that was pulling in water when I drove in the rain. The car is stock otherwise. I would like to reinstall the factory air box and move to stock AWD now that there are more drivers. The car is fast, probably faster then I can drive it but non-rally tires puts me at a disadvantage. I like odd ball cars and I am looking for another AWD that I can use for racing only. I want to fight the Subarus’ dominance.
How long have you been competing in RallyCross, or other motorsports/ sports?
I have been racing RallyCross for two years. All of it with the AZRA group. Mostly at Camp Verde with two events in Casa Grande. I started racing BMX bikes in the second grade in Texas. When we moved to Maryland there were no tracks, so after a few years I started racing Go-Karts. I did that until I was sixteen. At eighteen I ran a ‘73 Chevrolet at sunshine speedway in Florida until I was crashed out. After that I moved to SCCA ITA in a 91 Honda CRX that I built. My dad and I raced the car at Sebring, Daytona and, Moroso for 6 years. My dad crashed into a wall at Sebring. He was okay but the car was a total loss.
What are some things you enjoy doing outside of cars/ RallyCross?
I like to read sci-fi and fantasy books. I really enjoy playing Roll Playing Games like Pathfinder, Starfinder and Star Wars. I hike when I can even if it's just around my house. I live in a quiet country area so I don't have to go far for a beautiful view.
What is one personal motorsport highlight? RallyCross or otherwise. Similarly, do you have any negative moments?
I will start with the one negative. I was crashed out of circle track racing on purpose. Enduro class was entry-level and I was highly aggressive. A driver ran me into the wall so he could place in the top three. There was a win at all cost attitude in the drivers at that track.
The positive is Racing has brought me and my dad closer. Even during my teenage years with long hair, multi color hair and black finger nails (yes I still like black nails). Talking with him about braking areas and different lines to take at the track or working on the Go-Karts and later the cars, helped us build a relationship that was at times difficult. He worked a lot and I rebelled a lot, but over time if there was a race we were there and nothing else mattered.
Do you have anything else you would like to share with the group, and what plans and aspirations do you have for the future?
The future I hope has a NON Subaru winning Modified AWD with me at the wheel. With ONE exception the people who I have raced with over the years have been some of the best people you can know. This group that comes out to Camp Verde is growing and they are people you should know. Friendly and helpful they do anything that they can to get you on the track. Also, off the track win or lose they are great fun to hang out with. Finally, I would like everyone to know that racing and that this group has helped me a lot. I have had some very low lows in my life. As I started to get back up I got back into racing to help move forward in a positive direction. Thank you all for helping me in ways you can't even imagine.
